Craps Rules and Terms

Upon seeing all of the action surrounding a game of Craps - people shouting and the table covered with different bets - you may get the impression that Craps is a confusing game with a lot of complicated rules and terms. This couldn't be further from the truth.

The rules of Craps are actually pretty simple and revolve around the many different bets. Of course, each casino may offer their own variation of online Craps rules, so it's a good idea to read through them before you start playing. And, like any online casino game, it comes with its own lingo. Check out the following glossary of terms to help you ease into the world of online Craps.



  • Ace Deuce: This is a type of Proposition Bet. Its name refers to the one and two showing on the dice when you roll a 3. See Craps Bets and Odds for more information
  • Bank: This is a Craps term that refers to 1) the type of craps your playing (bank Craps is formal Craps played in a land-based casino), or 2) the Dealer or the bank in online Craps.
  • Bones: This is a slang term used in online Craps that refers to the dice.
  • Chip(s): This is a small disc(s) with a value of money assigned to it. It's used to place your bet.
  • Come Bet: This is a type of Craps bet. See Craps Bets and Odds for more information.

  • Come Out Roll: This is the first roll of a new game of craps.
  • Craps: This is a term used to refer to rolling a 2, 3, or 12.
  • Dealer: This is the person overseeing the game. In online Craps, the computer is often referred to as the Dealer.
  • Dice: These are small cubes with numbers on them, used to play the game of Craps.
  • Even Money: This is a term used to describe a payout. If you win even money, your bet will be returned to you.
  • House Advantage: This is the advantage that any online casino has over the player in any online casino game. It's also often referred to as the 'edge'. Online Craps has one of the lower house advantages of any other online casino game.
  • Line Bets: This is a Craps term that refers to a bet placed on the Pass or Don't Pass Lines.
  • Natural: This term refers to rolling a 7 or 11.
  • Off Button: This is a small disc on the table that shows that the game is in the come out roll.
  • On Button: This is a small disc on the table that shows that the game is past the come out roll. It also indicates where the game is with each subsequent roll.
  • Payout: This is a term that refers to the amount of money you win on any bet.
  • Point: This is a term that refers to a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10.

  • Roll: This is a term used to describe the player throwing the dice.
  • Seven-Out: This is a term used when a player rolls a 7 after the point has been established.
  • Shoot: This is a term used to describe the player throwing the dice. Also known as a 'roll'.
  • Shooter: This is a term used to refer to the player that's throwing the dice.
  • Stickman: This is a term used to describe the Dealer who oversees the game and uses a curved stick to deliver the dice to the shooter with each roll. This term is more applicable in land-based casinos than online casinos.
  • Strategy: This is a set of tips that are compiled to help you increase your chances of winning.

  • System: Also known as 'Strategy', this is a way of playing designed to increase your chances of winning.
